Brightspace will allow you to upload videos directly into a module as content. However, they limit the size of the video to 1 gigabyte. This is the size of a short video, typically less than 10 minutes. If your video file is too large, here are some options for sharing it with your class.

YouTube

Because YouTube is specifically a video hosting site, there is no limit to video file size when uploading.  Because it is a free and public website, there can be some concern about security of your videos.  This is one of the cons of YouTube, as it is more open access to the wider public.

However, YouTube offers the option to upload your videos as "Unlisted," which means that the video cannot be searched for and can only be viewed via a link.  This would be idea for uploading course videos and sharing them with Brightspace, as they would only be accessible via the embedded YouTube clip or link to the YouTube video.

To upload a video to YouTube and make it Unlisted:

  1. Login to YouTube using a Google account.  If you would like to not use or make a personal Google account, please feel free to contact our office at digital.learning@ptsem.edu and we will give you access to one of the Google accounts we have created for this purpose.

  2. Click the camera icon to create a new video.  It is located at the top of the window towards the right of the screen.

  3. From the dropdown menu, select Upload Video.

  4. Either click and drag your video file to the window or click Select Files to manually find and import the video file to be uploaded.

  5. Once you have selected your video file, it will begin uploading.  YouTube will then prompt you to do the following things:
    • Give your video a Title (it can be the same name that you had it saved on your computer or you can change it)
    • Optionally, you can add a description about the video
    • Answer the Audience question: Is this video made for kids?  Select No, it's not made for kids.

  6. After you have answered those things, click Next. You can then click Next again to reach the Visibility settings.

  7. Under the Visibility settings, select Unlisted.
Please Note: If you select Private, you have to manually invite people to view the video via their google accounts.  Do not do this.  Unlisted is the setting that you want to be able to share the link or embed the YouTube video into your course.
  8. After you select Unlisted, click Save. Your video may take a while to upload. Please do not close out of the YouTube window while it is uploading, or you will lose your progress.

  9. Once the upload is complete, you can hover over the video title and a menu of icons will appear.  Click the triple dot icon to the far right.

  10. In the drop down window that opens, click Get Shareable Link.  This will automatically copy the video link to your clipboard and you can then paste it into Brightspace.  For instructions on sharing a link on Brightspace, click here.

Sharepoint

If you are concerned about privacy issues with YouTube, you can also upload your video files into a folder on Sharepoint and share the folder with your class.

To upload files onto Sharepoint:

  1. First, open the Sharepoint webpage for your specific folder.  We will email you a link to access this folder.  If you have not been emailed said link, please contact us at digital.learning@ptsem.edu.

  2. To upload the file, click Upload on the menu at the top of the webpage.

  3. Select File from the drop down menu.

  4. Select the video file or files that you would like to upload from your computer.  It may take a few minutes for them to upload.

  5. Once the files have been uploaded, you can either share the entire folder to Brightspace as a link, or you can share specific video files as links.
    • To share the Sharepoint folder, click Copy Link in the menu at the top of the window.  Then click Copy.

    • To share a specific video file, hover over the file name.  Click on the Triple Dot icon that appears.  Then click Copy Link in the drop down menu.  Then click Copy.

  6. Open your Brightspace page and module where you would like to share the folder with videos.

  7. Enter the Module you created for the week or class session, and select Upload / Create. Then Select Create a Link.

  8. Enter a Title for the link, copy and paste the URL into the URL space, and check the Open as External Resource box.
Note: The link will not work if this box is not checked.

  9. Click Create. You should then see something like the image below in the Module.
